This is my dog, Shaymus. He is half Chihuahua & half Jack Russel Terrier. He was born in Lahaina, Maui and I adopted him as a rescue puppy from the Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation (HARF) when he was 2 days old. I call him my “Lucky dog” bc his birth date is 12-12-2012. The picture of him as a puppy placed him in the running up for PETCO's annual animal contest calendar! - Kuuipo Lau, JB Elmendorf-Richardson

I wish I still had a pet. I don't currently have one. So I'm going to share my pet that I had years ago. His name was Scotty. I adopted him from the animal shelter. When I walked in he was the only dog that wasn't barking and jumping up on the cage. He was slumped down in the back of his cage looking very depressed. He looked like he needed a home more than any of the other ones because it seemed he had already given up. I walked up to the cage and held out my hand for him to sniff and said something to him and he walked over and sniffed my hand and his tail slowly wagged a tiny bit. Somebody at the shelter asked me if I wanted to take him out and play with him in the backyard so he let him out, and boy did he have fun! I was throwing the ball for him and he didn't know whether to jump on top of me or go get the ball and bring it back. He was so spastic and going crazy, and he was happy and grinning from ear-to-ear! He was half American Eskimo and seemed to be mixed with Shetland Sheepdog and maybe a little bit of Cocker Spaniel. I think I asked him what his name was and I just intuitively got Scotty. He just looked like that was his personality. He was very fearful of men for a very long time. Apparently someone had hit him before. He was hand shy and would cower when somebody went to pet him. But towards the end of his life he got more and more friendly and he was very outgoing. He was extremely sweet and kind, and super smart. His favorite foods were broccoli and chicken and he also liked popcorn. Whenever I made popcorn sometimes when I lifted the lid off, a kernel or two would go flying on the floor and he would run into the kitchen to grab it! Scotty also loved chasing squirrels, and the one time he caught up to one he didn't know what to do with it and he just freaked out and then he backed away! He was definitely not a hunting dog but he did enjoy catching Frisbees and swimming at Dog Beach. - Judith Dakota, Naval Base San Diego, CA
