The Effective Communication Skills for Couples course offers a robust communication training that can be offered as one course or broken into six modules that are approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length. The six modules are: Module 1 – Introduction to Communication; Module 2 – Active Listening; Module 3 – Challenging Cognitive Distortions that Block Communication; Module 4 – Effectively Communicating Emotions; Module 5 – Communicating Assertively and Module 6 – Negotiation in Communication. Each module is described in detail below.

Module 1 – Introduction to Communication C0288
During the Introduction to Communication presentation, participants will receive a robust overview of verbal as well as non-verbal communication and styles of communication to include passive, aggressive and assertive communication. Approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length.

Module 2 – Active Listening C0289
During the Active Listening presentation, participants will learn that active listening is a key component of effective communication. This presentation explores blocks to effective listening, what it means to be an active listener and review important communication guidelines.  Participants will be offered an opportunity to practice their active listening skills. Approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length.

During the Challenging Cognitive Distortions that Block Communication presentation, participants will learn to identify communication obstacles that can derail healthy communication. Approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length.

Module 4 – Effectively Communicating Emotions C0291
During the Effectively Communicating Emotions presentation, participants will learn how to communicate difficult feelings using ‘I’ statements, learn how reflective listening aides in clear communication and use validation techniques to acknowledge the speaker’s point of view. Participants will be offered the opportunity to practice the validation techniques learned. Approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length.
