Jim Steelman has been a Supervisor/Liaison with the MFLC program since September 2008. Throughout that time, Jim has worked primarily with the Army MFLCs with the exception of a year and a half when he was dedicated to the program roll out with the West Coast and Hawaii Marines.
Jim, a Native Texan, joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from Del Norte High School in Del Norte, CO. He rose through the enlisted ranks to Engineman Chief Petty Officer (ENC/SW) and then received a commission as a Chief Warrant Officer. Jim served sea tours on five ships and served four shore duty tours at various installations. He served in various roles from mess cook and compartment cleaner to Division CPO, Division Officer, Engineering Department Head, QA Officer and Counseling and Assistance Center Director at sea and ashore. He also earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees during his Naval Career. Jim retired as a CWO3 in 1997 after 23 ½ years of active duty.
After retirement, Jim moved to the Rio Grande Valley (TX) and opened a new store for his brother’s expanding office equipment business. He served as General Manager of the McAllen store for 15 months before moving back to Del Norte, CO. Jim, during his 10 years in Del Norte, served six months as a Town Board member and two elected terms as Mayor. He worked as a Substance Abuse and Mental Health counselor as well as an Adult and Adolescent Sex Offender treatment provider at Crossroads Turning Points and the San Luis Valley Community Mental Health Center. Jim was Assistant Director of the San Luis Valley Community Corrections Center before completing the CO DOC Academy and working as a Counselor at Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility in Crowley, CO. His previous employer then asked him to return to Crossroads to serve as Assistant Director where he later became Interim Director.
Jim is a proud Life Member of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA), joining in 2008. He served as the Chapter Commander of Texas Chapter 23-1 (Dallas area) from 2009 to 2015. He is currently the Regional Representative for CVMA Region 5, covering TX, AR, LA and OK. He is also a Life Member of the VFW and the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). He is married with four children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
