The State Department is strongly recommending that if you have a United States passport expiring any time in 2016, renew it now!
As we shared with you in an email last week, states with non-compliant drivers licenses in accordance with the Real ID Act will need an alternative form of identification such as a passport. This is expected to lead to a sharp increase in first time passport applications this year.
Also, according to a recent New York Times article, “Officials are expecting a flood of renewals of 10-year passports issued in 2006 and 2007. The latter was the year when the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative went into effect, for the first time requiring passports for Americans returning by air from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda.”
And yet another reason to renew early… Many countries are now enforcing a requirement that a United States passport be valid six months out from the point of travel. We would obviously like to avoid a situation where you are denied entry for an OCONUS assignment because your passport has less than six months to go!
Long story, short? If your passport expires in 2016 please renew as soon as possible to avoid any delays!
We very much appreciate your cooperation and support.
